Advent-ually.

In addition to the Channukah box from ChemKnits Creations, I bought one from A Hundred Ravens.  When I saw the box held more than eight items I thought it was for the twelve days of Christmas or some such, and set it aside.  The wrapping of course should have reminded me!  I started opening it and realized my mistake - it was set up for two items per night of Hanukah!  So I opened them all in one go.

   

   

   

   

   

   

   

   

As you can see, the even-numbered boxes contained an extra goody, plus there was a final one at the end labeled "Open Me Last!"  And a wee crown:

Several of the extras are stitch markers, but the blue bottle came with a recipe to make freezable bubble solution, plus there is a sticker, a magnet, a snowflake-shaped lollipop, and a tiny pin with two dreidels:

I don't think I will keep them in this order, especially because Days #9 and #10 are so close in colour.  In addition to the knitting pattern standard in this box, they sent the crochet pattern for the yarns.  You were supposed to indicate whether you are a "Knitting Queen" or a "Crocheting Queen" when ordering.  I ordered two boxes with a note that I did so because I do both crafts and thus want both patterns.  Then I received a cancellation notice for part of the order, because they decided to send both patterns to me with just one box!  Some dyers will ask for a couple-few dollars extra if you want both patterns, but they were very nice and surprised me.

Eight nights of light.

It was a stunning beginning to the holiday as we learned of the terrorist attack in Bondi Beach.  And the terrorism continues throughout the world, with synagogues and other Jewish buildings receiving bomb threats, as so many of them have in the last two-plus years since the attacks of October 7, 2023.  Of course these attacks didn't start then, but they have tripled and multiplied even more than that.  It's as if the attacks let people feel empowered to bring their anti-Jewish views and intentions into the streets, the gathering places, the eyes of the world.

And there is the other side, which are people coming together in support, to do good deeds to overcome the evil that is happening, to show that just as the candles each evening overcome the darkness of the night, so too can the goodness in the world overcome the darkness that threatens to wash over us.

One of the observations in my rabbis' Hannukah message to the congregation really resonates with me:  "Perhaps, the miracle of Chanukah is not that there was enough oil for the menorah to last eight days, but rather, that on the first day, when they saw how much oil was left, that the Maccabees had enough faith to go ahead and light it anyway."  This is something I've often thought as well: the miracle is that their faith held despite everything that had happened to them.  In many ways, that is how it feels to be Jewish today.

Again this year I bought the ChemKnits Creations Channukah box for myself:

Some days came with stitch markers or a little light.  On the bottom photo, it is Day 1 on the far right and across to Day 8 on the far left, plus the bonus skein at the top.  This way each of the miniskeins is 10gm and the extra is 20gm to give a total of 100gms in fingering or DK weight.  My favourites this year are Day 7 (sadly, sold out) followed by Day 5 and the bonus skein.  Now to figure out what to make.

Chanukah Yarning.

I purchased a couple of "Channukah Advents" from an indie dyer; while Advent is a Christian thing, these follow the same plan of having wrapped packages that you open each night:

I'd purchased one from the dyer last year, a leftover, and had forgotten to open it, so did that one on each night as well:

This year I bought one each in the fingering and DK weights; last year's is fingering weight.  Each year she provided 100 grams of yarn, but in two different ways.  I also bought some additional yarns, optional add-ons in full-sized skeins:

She made a point of saying that these are made of clay.

 

Each night I opened the numbered package.  For the 2023 set, on two nights the package included two miniskeins, for a total of ten, plus a stitch marker one night.  For the 2024 set, the odd-numbered nights included stitch markers:

The dyer created two additional colourways, one on a yak/silk blend base, and the other on a sparkle base.  You could add these to your order, and I did!

 

She also sold the "yarn mops" she used to clean up dye and wipe her hands, and I purchased one of those for each of the two extra nights.  That is the skein at the top of Night 9 and on the right for Night 10.  You may notice that the two skeins for Night 9 are different weights; those are the last two she had.  I think I found a shawl pattern that will let me use them together.

I don't know what I will make from these sets, especially as the nights are very different plus I have boxes in different weights.  Because I decided that "dry January" will involve no yarn buying, I won't get more of the sets - these are plenty of yarn just as they are!

Two years ago I bought a Hannukah set from Olive and Two Ewe, and I took photos but forgot to post about it:

The theme is "tea" and not every day included yarn.
Some days had teapot stitch markers, needle stoppers,
or a tea bag rest and mug mat and sachets of tea.

I've been thinking about what to do with the yarns, selected a pattern, but didn't get started.  The very bright pink bothered me because it seems out of place with the others by its intensity.  While looking for ideas for this year found a pattern that I like better for these yarns, and it appears to need only four of the miniskeins so I am leaving out the intense pink.  I cast on New Year's Day, as my First New Project of 2025, and also a 'me' project:

And re-reading "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" in preparation for the library's SciFi Book Club meeting on Wednesday.  This will be my fourth book finished in January!
